The Best Bars in Chamonix: Vibe, Reviews, and Where to Go

A warm, lively bar counter in Chamonix

Chamonix has a real bar scene, from the legendary après-ski where the atmosphere spills out over the tables to quieter places for a drink for two. This guide sorts them by atmosphere and by crowd, using the real reviews (good and bad) left by customers — including the addresses to avoid.

Tip: most of the good bars are concentrated in the town centre, a few minutes’ walk from one another — it is easy to take in several in one evening.

Table of Contents

At a Glance, in Order of Importance

1. The Après-Ski That Brings the Town to Life

The essential stops for a lively night out, with a fairly young, international crowd — a mix of seasonal workers and travellers. The atmosphere builds fast, especially after 17h in high season.

2. Good Beer and a Friendly Atmosphere

For craft beer lovers and a more relaxed atmosphere, family-friendly early in the evening.

3. For a Quieter Evening or a Night Out for Two

Quieter addresses, ideal for dinner or a drink for two, before some of them turn into a dancefloor later in the evening.

4. The Addresses to Avoid

In the interests of being straight with our travellers, two things to watch out for:

5. Budget and Tipping: What You Need to Know

Expect around €6 to €9 for a standard draught beer and €10 to €14 for a cocktail in most bars in the centre; Les Caves sits towards the top of that range for its cocktails and grands crus. Bar d’Up and happy hours in general bring the bill down noticeably early in the evening.

Tipping is not compulsory in France (service is included in the bill) but leaving the change or rounding up for good service is appreciated, especially in the livelier bars such as Chambre Neuf or MBC in high season.

6. Practical Tips for Your Night Out

Most bars close between 1h and 2h in the morning. Chambre Neuf and MBC are the liveliest addresses in the evening during the school holidays (Christmas, February) — arrive early if you want a seat. Les Caves sometimes takes bookings for groups in the evening. Many of these addresses are a few minutes’ walk from one another: there is nothing to stop you taking in several bars in the same evening, as plenty of regulars do.

FAQ – Bars in Chamonix

Chambre Neuf is the benchmark: live band, party atmosphere from early afternoon. MBC and Bar d’Up are two good alternatives, a little less packed.

Yes: Les Caves for a cocktail or a glass of wine in a hushed setting (before it turns into a dancefloor at weekends after 23h), or La Terrasse during the day for the view of Mont-Blanc.

Yes: we recommend avoiding L’Amnesia Club following several serious reports linked to safety. Le Choucas, a former institution, has closed for good after 70 years in business.
